I was never very fashionable. I always played it safe. If I put something “cute” together it seemed to always be by chance.
Then I became a mama to my precious firstborn. My body changed and since I decided to stay home with him, I no longer needed my closet full of business attire.
On top of that, I didn’t go out and see people very much now that I stayed home.
My fashion dilemma reached a critical point and I need HELP!
I couldn’t find very much online that helped walk a frumpy mom to chic mom territory.
But that’s what I desperately needed!
So I started my own blog about it. I wrote it for myself. But the throngs of other mamas thirsty for the same help found it too and the community behind Frump Fighters® was born!
4 years later, I am excited to share with you that not only is my wardrobe 100% transformed, I was able to do it on a budget!
How to Defrump Your Wardrobe After Kids
I’m going to walk you through the basic steps you need to take to update your wardrobe and refresh your style on a budget.
Now over 40,000 moms have used this method I discovered to learn how to dress well again after kids.

Purge your closetOne of the reasons we feel like we “have nothing to wear” is because our brains are bombarded with so many decisions when we open our closets.
We usually have SO much in there that we don’t even like wearing, doesn’t fit us, or isn’t going to work for the current season.
Set a date with yourself on the calendar RIGHT NOW to go through your closet.
As you pull out each item in your closet and drawers, decide whether you love the item and would wear it tomorrow. If so, put it back in your closet.
For everything else that you didn’t decide you loved, place in one of three piles:
If your options decreased drastically after finishing “the purge,” take heart… you’re actually going to have an EASIER time finding something to wear in the morning because only your favorites are visible!
Plan your wardrobe’s color schemeThe purpose of planning a color scheme for your wardrobe is to allow remixability among your clothes.
When you stick to a pre-planned color scheme, you insure that everything you buy will “match” with the other clothes in your closet AND it will narrow down all the bazillion choices out there.
Right now you’re brainstorming a color scheme to start with, but it’s super flexible! You can change it as much as you like as you work on your wardrobe.
Here is an example color scheme:
What colors are you drawn to? What colors already show up a lot in your wardrobe?
These make a great starting point to a color scheme that will insure your future purchases mix and match with each other!

Use a wardrobe checklist to shop your closetYou can download my free Wardrobe Checklist for Moms to complete this step.
With your checklist in hand, it’s time to go through your freshly purged closet to see how much of the items in the recommended list you already have.
The list will explain the main features you’re looking for in a piece—if you have a match then you can check that off the list!
For example, Neutral Long-Sleeve Tee. The checklist explains it needs to be a long-sleeve shirt in a solid neutral color like navy, black, or gray. Have something that fits the bill? Check it off!
Once you’ve finished going through the list and finding matches in your wardrobe, you’ll likely have some items left unchecked on the list.
And here’s where the magic happens…. Voila! You just created a shopping list without doing any of the thinking yourself!
Plan a healthy clothing budget and fill in the gapsIt took me three years to fill in all the gaps in my wardrobe. But you know what? I felt 100% more stylish from day 1!
You don’t need a big wardrobe with ALL THE THINGS to feel more stylish.
You just need the RIGHT things. And that’s what the shopping list you just created (in the last step) is helping you shoot for.
Plan a monthly amount you can set aside for yourself to go shopping. Then hit the thrift and consignment shops first to see what you can find.
You might even host a clothing swap with some of your friends! (Tip: Invite some of your most stylish friends because they’ll be getting rid of some cute stuff!)

Try new outfit combinationsI read once that moms make an average of 35,000 micro decisions every single day.
That’s why when we get dressed it’s too easy to reach for the same tried-and-true outfit combinations every single day. But did you know there are dozens (maybe even hundreds) of outfit combinations in your very own closet that you’ve never tried?
To help moms try new outfits without causing more decisions, I created an Outfit Guide book that contains 374 outfit formulas that are perfect for everyday mom life.
