My girls are 18 months apart to the day. When I was pregnant with my second, everyone just talked about how hard it would be. Impossibly hard. I was terrified and unsure as to how we would survive. Surely, this baby would ruin everything! There were so many people casting this negativity on my growing family- whether it was glances at the store or unwelcome comments on the playground. Everyone seems to think that having babies close together is nothing but trouble. They are wrong. I love having two under two and it just gets better. From the moment my second daughter was born, it has been the most fun that I have ever had. Period. Yes, it is a lot of work, but most fun worth having is going to be work (Have you ever been to an amusement park? There is a lot of walking). If you find yourself in this situation, ignore the negativity and get ready for the greatest season of your life. Below are five reasons why I think having two under two is worth it. 1) Easy Mental Transition With two under two, you are already in the thick of it. This wonderful ‘season of baby’ is just extended for the next one. You’re already used to changing diapers, hauling half of your home everywhere you go, getting woken in the middle of the night… you know the drill. This way is much less of a shock to your system and can make the transition much easier. 2) The Younger One Will Learn From the Older One For several things, your younger child is just along for the ride. While you are teaching the alphabet, your baby is in the nearby swing absorbing the lesson as well. For potty training my oldest, all three of us were in the bathroom (for what felt like an eternity) for each lesson. This made teaching my little one SO much easier when the time came to potty train her. 3) Instant Friends They don’t know life without each other and it’s amazing. For them, to have each other join in on the fun is the best part. Yes, they bicker and fight over little things throughout the day, but they prefer to be around each other. Plus, it was incredible to have my oldest get to experience the pride of becoming a big sister. It felt like my oldest understood her purpose- to love and care for this baby as much as mom and dad do. Whether it’s translating her baby talk or getting her a spoon for her applesauce- she gets it and I get to be a part of it. 4) They Share Everything In my home, we have chosen to have communal toys. This essentially means that my kids have their own blanket and a special toy- the rest is up for grabs and taking turns. Because they are so close in age, most of the things that they enjoy are the same so it makes it easy to have a few Paw Patrol toys while they go through this season. 5) And of course the clothes! As the youngest one grows, they are getting closer and closer to the same size in clothes which makes my life easier- who doesn’t need that? As they grow, I know there will be seasons of closeness and resentment like with most sisters. I can’t wait to watch their relationship grow as the years pass and see what new and exciting things that I will enjoy with having babies so close in age.
